Bowser Administration Announces City Preparedness Plan for the Stanley Cup Final

(WASHINGTON, DC) – To maintain a safe and enjoyable experience for District residents, commuters, visitors, and businesses around the Stanley Cup Final in the #SportsCapital, the Bowser Administration has coordinated service and logistical operations across multiple District agencies, with updates and modifications listed below. The area around Capital One Arena will have restrictions ahead of the home games, which will start this Saturday, June 2, 2018. The best-of-seven series began on May 28, 2018 in Las Vegas and has the potential to go until Game 7 on June 13, 2018. The Capitals’ home games will be: Game 3 on Saturday, June 2, Game 4 on Monday, June 4, and Game 6 on Sunday, June 10 (if the Capitals have not beat the Golden Knights by then).

Traffic and Parking Enforcement:

In order to facilitate this event, there will be no vehicular traffic in the blocks around the Capital One Arena listed below. The closures began on May 29 at 11 pm and will stay in place until approximately 3 pm on June 11:

  • F Street, NW from 5th Street to 7th Street, NW
  • 6th Street, NW from E Street to H Street, NW (accessible only to local residents and monthly parking pass holders)
  • G Street, NW between 5th Street and 6th Street (accessible only to local residents and monthly parking pass holders)

Traffic Restrictions for Home Games:

On Saturday, June 2, the following streets will be closed: 

  • G Street from 7th Street – 9th Street, NW (6 am – 11 pm)
  • 8th Street from G Street to H Street, NW (6 am – 11 pm)
  • F Street from 7th Street – 9th Street, NW (3:30 pm – 11 pm)
  • 8th Street from E Street to F Street, NW (3:30 pm – 11 pm)
  • 7th Street from E Street to H Street, NW (3:30 pm – midnight)

For all subsequent home games, the above street closures will be in effect from 3:30 pm until midnight.

Parking Restrictions for Home Games:

From 6 am until midnight: 

  • No parking on G Street, NW between 7th Street and 9th Street
  • No parking on F Street, NW between 7th Street and 9th Street

From 4 pm until four hours after the game ends: 

  • No parking will be allowed within the following perimeter: Pennsylvania Avenue to the south, I Street, NW to the north, 3rd Street to the east, and 9th  Street to the west

The public should expect parking restrictions in the area and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage. All vehicles that are parked in the area and in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed. These vehicles will be relocated to legal spaces. Motorists whose vehicles are towed should call (202) 541-6083.
 
All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions. Motorists will encounter delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) also wish to remind motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated. 
 

Bike Access:  

  • Capital Bikeshare stations will be closed at 5th and F Streets, NW and 7th and F Streets, NW four hours before home games and reopen four hours after the game.
  • DDOT will set up a bike corral in the area to create additional parking for Capital Bikeshare bikes (specific location will be announced prior to the first home game).

Public Safety Alerts:

  • Members of the public are encouraged to sign up for text alerts to receive safety, transit, and weather updates from the District on days when the Stanley Cup games are being played in Washington, DC.
  • Text “ALLCAPS” to 888-777 to sign-up.

Public Health:

Sanitation Activities/Saturday, June 2

  • Department of Public Works (DPW) sanitation crews will clean the streets before and after the game, inside and outside of the barricaded area.

Sanitation Activities/Monday, June 4  

  • After AM rush hour (9:30 a.m.), DPW sanitation crews will remove newspaper boxes, the liners from public litter cans, and other easily moved items from inside and outside the barricaded area.
  • Starting four hours before the game, these crews also will clean the streets adjacent to the Capital One Arena. After the game ends, these crews will return to clean the area within and outside of the barricades.
