Mayor Bowser Invites Residents to Celebrate National Volunteer Week by Joining the District’s 10th Annual Spring Cleanup

Monday, April 20, 2026
RSVP Now to Join Neighbors, Roll Up Your Sleeves, and Help Keep DC Clean and Vibrant

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations (MOCRS), the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs (MOCA), and the Department of Public Works (DPW) are inviting residents to celebrate National Volunteer Week by joining the District’s 10th Annual Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 25. National Volunteer Week, celebrated nationwide during the third week of April, is a moment to honor the countless residents who give their time, talents, and energy to strengthen the fabric of our city and to recommit to the partnerships that make the District a place where neighbors show up for one another.

With cleanup events happening in all eight wards on Saturday, April 25 at 10 am, this citywide day of service is an opportunity for every DC resident to take pride in their neighborhood and give back to the community they love. Neighbors are encouraged to RSVP at tinyurl.com/DCSpringCleanup2026.

“This Spring Cleanup isn’t just about picking up litter. It’s about neighbors meeting each other, investing in the places we love, and working together to better our communities,” said Mayor Bowser. “If you are free this Saturday, I encourage you to register for a cleanup. And if you’re not free, I encourage you to learn more about our Helping Hand program and use it to organize your own neighborhood cleanup in the coming weeks.”

The District will mobilize residents, community groups, and agency partners to participate in the 10th Annual Spring Cleanup. This year’s cleanup sites include:

Ward 1:
Banneker Recreation Center, 2500 Georgia Avenue, NW

Ward 2:
Garrison Elementary School, 1200 S Street, NW

Ward 3:
Guy Mason Recreation Center, 3700 Calvert Street, NW

Ward 4:
Emery Heights Recreation Center, 5701 Georgia Avenue, NW

Ward 5:
Crummell School, 1900 Gallaudet Street, NE

Ward 6:
Sherwood Recreation Center, 640 10th Street, NE

Ward 7:
Washington Senior Wellness Center, 3001 Alabama Avenue, SE

Ward 8:
Malcolm X Park, 500 Parkland Place, SE

“As we welcome warmer weather, this is our opportunity to come together as a community and take pride in every block, park, and neighborhood across the District,” said Lamont Carey, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs. “Spring cleaning is about more than maintenance; it’s about connection, civic pride, and making sure every resident feels proud of the community they call home.”

This year’s cleanup will highlight sustainability in recognition of Earth Month. Working with DPW’s Office of Waste Diversion, the event will incorporate recycling and responsible waste management practices to help ensure that materials collected during the cleanup are properly separated and diverted from landfills. Recycling stations will be available at each cleanup site, and volunteers will help participants separate recyclable materials from trash during the cleanup process. In addition, roll-off containers will be placed in each ward to help residents properly dispose of bulk waste and clutter.

With the arrival of spring, DPW crews have also resumed seasonal services, including street and alley cleaning, graffiti removal, grass cutting, and the Helping Hand program—all part of the District’s ongoing efforts to keep neighborhoods clean, support community beautification, and advance sustainability initiatives across the city. Residents interested in organizing neighborhood cleanups or participating in DPW’s sustainability programs can learn more by visiting dpw.dc.gov or zerowaste.dc.gov.

Residents are encouraged to report concerns such as trash build-up, illegal dumping, or abandoned vehicles by calling 311 or using the 311 mobile app.
