(Washington, DC) – On Monday, June 2 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will be joined by the District Department of Transportation and the NoMa Business Improvement District to cut the ribbon on the redesigned Mamie "Peanut" Johnson Plaza, formerly known as "Dave Thomas Circle." The event will also celebrate the completion of the Florida Avenue Multimodal Streetscape Project. Both of these projects will improve overall safety across the Florida Avenue NE corridor.
Prior to the redesign, the intersection at Florida Avenue NE and New York Avenue NE was one of the most dangerous intersections in the city. Key improvements include the addition of two-way traffic on First Street NE, the restoration of two-way traffic on Florida Avenue NE, new protected bicycle lanes, enhanced pedestrian connectivity, better vehicular flow and reduced driver confusion. The transformation along Florida Avenue from 2nd Street NE to H Street NE includes new sidewalks, protected bike lanes, new traffic signals, landscaping enhancements, curb realignment for traffic calming and additional bus platforms.
Last week, Mayor Bowser presented her Fiscal Year 2026 Budget, Grow DC. The budget includes significant investments in transportation and infrastructure across all eight wards, building on the Mayor’s longstanding commitment to a safer, more connected DC. The FY26 Budget includes $76 million in additional funds for WMATA to support bus and rail service, $402 million for major bridge rehabilitation and replacement, another $402 million to maintain roads, sidewalks and alleys in a state of good repair, $13 million to expand Capital Bikeshare, and $73 million to build out the pedestrian and bicycle trail network.
