Mayor Bowser to Hold 3rd Annual LGBTQIA+ Flag Raising to Celebrate Pride

Thursday, May 29, 2025

(Washington, DC) – Today, Thursday, May 29 at 4 pm, Mayor Bowser will be joined by members of the community, Capital Pride, and the DC Council for the third annual LGBTQIA+ Flag Raising Ceremony on the steps of the John A. Wilson building. This year’s ceremony holds special significance, as the District hosts WorldPride 2025 and celebrates 50 years of Pride celebrations in Washington, DC. This is only the second time a US city has been chosen to host WorldPride.

DC residents and WorldPride attendees are invited to attend the flag raising, as well as the many other celebrations taking place across the city through June 8. WorldPride boasts a full calendar of events designed to reflect the diversity within the global LGBTQIA+ community, including the WorldPride Parade, the Opening Concert—headlined by international superstar Shakira—and the WorldPride Festival, featuring performances from Doechii and Cynthia Erivo.

Other highlights include the WorldPride Welcome Center in Downtown DC, the 17th Street Block Party, in DC’s historic Dupont Circle neighborhood, and the Diversity of Pride series, which elevates the voices and experiences of members of the LGBTQIA+ community. More than 85 WorldPride events have already taken place, with many more to come over the next week and a half.
