Mayoral Values Award Program - Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to be nominated?

All permanent full-time or part-time District government employees with at least one (1) year of continuous service in the District government by the date of submission who are in good standing are eligible. This includes all those employees who work under the Mayor’s authority and/or independent agencies.

Executive and Excepted Service appointees who hold director level or agency head positions or above, elected officials, members of boards and commissions as specified in D.C. Official Code §§ 1-602.2(2) and (3), and chief judges, associate judges, and non-judicial personnel of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals are excluded from consideration as a nominee.

What does “good standing” mean?

Employees who have received a performance rating of at least Valued Performer (3) (or equivalent) on their last performance rating and have no current or pending disciplinary action.

Who can nominate an employee for an award?

Any District government employee or resident may nominate an employee, team, or agency. To start the process, a nomination form must be completed and submitted online. Nomination forms can be found on the Mayor’s website at MayoralAwards.dc.gov or at dchr.dc.gov/page/forms-and-applications.

Are self-nominations allowed?

Yes. You can self-nominate in every awards category (i.e., Values Champion, Values Team, and Values Agency).

What are the award nomination categories?

There are three (3) award categories available, which are: Values Champion (individual), Values Team (team, unit, division, or administration within an agency) and Values Agency.

I won the Values Champion award this fiscal year, but I am now a part of a Values Team nomination. Can I be nominated again?

Yes. You may be nominated as a member of the Values Team or Values Agency award, but not for the Values Champion award until the next fiscal year.

When are nominations due?

Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis; therefore, there is no deadline. Winners will be selected quarterly based on the nominations received at the end of the corresponding quarter (i.e. winners for 1st Quarter will be decided from nominations received by December 31).

I am nominating an employee for the Values Champion award, but I want to supply additional information as an attachment. Can I upload an attachment to the form?

All supplemental materials can be emailed directly to [email protected] for consideration. Please include your and the nominee’s contact information in the email.

What criteria should I use when nominating an employee, team, or agency?

The nomination criteria for each of the award categories can be found here.

What if the nominee does not exhibit all of the values in the criteria. Can I still submit the nomination?

No. While the District recognizes the hard work and dedication of DC government employees, this program is designed to celebrate those employees who demonstrate and uphold each of the Mayor’s Values each day.

Will I be notified when my nomination is under review?

Yes. You will receive an email once your nomination has been successfully submitted.

Can I resubmit my nomination request if the employee I nominated is not selected?

Yes, if the nominee is not selected you may resubmit the nomination form for reconsideration during the next fiscal quarter.

What if my nomination is selected, how will I know?

You and the award winner will receive notification from a member of the selection committee.

Can I nominate the same person or team more than once during the quarter?

No. Each nominator can only nominate the same person, team or agency once a quarter. A nominator can nominate multiple different employees in one quarter.

Will I receive a notification if I have been nominated?

All nominees will be notified at the end of each fiscal quarter.

How can I submit a nomination form if I don’t have access to a computer?
