Mayor Bowser to Host United Nations Secretary–General Ban Ki-moon at Brookland Middle School

Visit will Highlight Sustainable School Projects During Climate Action 2016 Event

Tomorrow, Mayor Muriel Bowser will host United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at Brookland Middle School in Ward 5. The Secretary-General will be visiting Washington, DC for the Climate Action 2016 event.

Mayor Bowser's and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's visit will highlight Washington, DC’s internationally acclaimed sustainability projects and innovative sustainable school features. Brookland Middle School is home to a green outdoor classroom, a solar learning station, geothermal heating and cooling system, exterior green wall, underground cisterns, rooftop solar array, pervious pavers, and more.

DC officials will hold a briefing for the Secretary-General on building sustainable schools, which will cover green construction, data driven efficiency, renewable energy, as well as waste reduction, recycling and composting. The briefing will be pooled press.

The Mayor and Secretary-General will host a Q & A with Brookland students on green energy, which will be open to pre-credentialed press.

Video of the visit will be pooled by the District of Columbia Network, streamed on mayor.dc.gov/live and posted on mayor.dc.gov following the visit. The Executive Office of the Mayor will also make photographs of the visit available immediately following the event.

Ban Ki-moon is the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. His priorities have included mobilizing world leaders around a set of new global challenges, from climate change and economic upheaval to pandemics and increasing pressures involving food, energy, and water.
