Mayor Bowser Celebrates the Re-Opening of Theodore Roosevelt High School

Friday, August 19, 2016

(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd, Chief of Schools John Davis, and other District officials celebrated the re-opening of Theodore Roosevelt High School. During the $140 million renovation since 2013, students attended classes in a swing space at MacFarland Middle School. This will be the first time in 25 years that students have entered Roosevelt through the 13th Street entrance on their first day of school.

"Ward 4 neighbors have been looking forward to the opening of the reimagined Theodore Roosevelt High School for quite some time," said Mayor Bowser. "I am proud to deliver a neighborhood school that will provide a quality education option for families for many years to come."

The Department of General Services worked to maintain historic features that kept original architecture, artwork, and marble with modern features. The new design creates a high performance school that both conserves resources, and creates an environment conducive to learning. The new building is equipped with the following:

  • Photo-sensitive glass
  • Enclosed atrium
  • Technology-enhanced classrooms
  • Modern laboratories
  • Health clinic
  • Media center
  • Dance studio
  • 3 career technology labs
  • 2 JROTC classrooms
  • Cosmetology lab and classroom
  • Dedicated zones for the public and the school
  • Storm water management and on-site power generation system

"This newly renovated Roosevelt High School embodies the best in what the District and our agency, the Department of General Services, have to offer. Our dedicated teams have collaborated with residents, students, and experts in every discipline to create a world-class facility that will inspire learning and elevate the quality of life for our community,” said Interim Director Greer Gillis.

Roosevelt will also start the school year with a new principal, Aqueelha James. Principal James has over fourteen years of educational experience, and comes to Roosevelt from John Burroughs Education Campus.
