Bowser Administration to Host Community Meetings on Short-Term Family Housing

Wednesday, February 10, 2016

(Washington, DC) –  Last fall, the Council of the District of Columbia approved Mayor Muriel Bowser’s plan to replace DC General Family Shelter with small, dignified and neighborhood-based short-term family housing across the city. This week, the Mayor announced the details of the plan, including short-term housing locations and preliminary designs.

Tomorrow, District officials will host a community meeting in each Ward to discuss the plan, review designs for each short-term facility, and solicit community input.  This is the first of several conversations the Bowser Administration will hold in the coming months.

“In a city as prosperous as ours, everyone deserves a fair shot – including our most vulnerable families who find themselves homeless,” said Mayor Bowser. “We put forward a plan that gives our entire city an opportunity to help families get back on their feet, by creating short-term family housing in every corner the District.  And because this is a community approach, we want the community to have a chance to participate.  That’s what tomorrow’s meetings are all about.”

City Administrator Rashad Young, Department of Human Services Director Laura Zeilinger, Interagency Council on Homelessness Executive Director Kristy Greenwalt, Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs Director Charon Hines and others will host presentations and engage the community in Q&A.

All community meetings are open to the press and public.
