Overview

In her Fiscal Year 2020 budget, Mayor Bowser continues her relentless commitment to giving every Washingtonian a fair shot and a pathway to the middle class. These have been and continue to be very good times for Washington, DC, and in this budget, the Mayor asks commercial property owners to share some of the upside. In doing so, the District will be able to make big investments in supporting our most vulnerable neighbors and in keeping DC affordable for families and residents across the income spectrum.

Highlights in the FY 2020 Budget:

  • Increasing the annual investment in the Housing Production Trust Fund to $130 million
  • A new $20 million Workforce Housing Fund, which will yield another $180 million in private sector investment
  • Continuing to support our senior residents’ abilities to age in place by increasing our investment in the Safe at Home program by $2 million
  • Eliminating the sales tax on diapers
  • Doubling-down on investments in our East of the River neighborhoods
  • A new $23 million investment in Homeward DC and a new $11 million investment in the District’s short-term family housing programs
  • Continued investments in increasing the Metropolitan Police Department to 4,000 officers and new investments in the District’s efforts to prevent violence, reduce recidivism, and treat trauma
