(Washington, DC) - Mayor Muriel Bowser will put the District Snow Team on standby starting at 6:30 am Friday morning, December 23 to address possible freezing rain and light snow predicted by the National Weather Service. Freezing rain with the slight possibility of light snow may occur between 10 am and 2 pm with temperatures in the low 30s.
Temperatures will remain in the low 30s headed into Saturday with night temperatures quickly dropping into the teens. Therefore, icy conditions can be expected with standing water or wet pavement.
The Snow Team will place 28 salt trucks on standby, from 6:30 am until 6:30 pm on Friday, to address any reports of icy conditions.
The DC Snow Team encourages residents and commercial property owners to apply abrasives such as rock salt, deicer, or non-clumping kitty litter to the sidewalks around their properties to reduce the possibility of icing and to prevent slips and falls whenever freezing precipitation is anticipated. The Snow Team uses pet friendly deicer on District pedestrian bridges. While any snow accumulation is unlikely this week, as the season progresses, business and homeowners are reminded that they must clear their sidewalks, parklets, and streateries of any ice or snow within eight daylight hours of an event’s end.

- Check on vulnerable neighbors and call the Shelter Hotline at (202) 399-7093 to request transportation to shelter for persons in the District who are experiencing homelessness.
- Register for important weather alerts from the District by signing up for AlertDC at alert.dc.gov. You can also receive alerts by following the AlertDC Twitter feed.
- Volunteer with Serve DC to clear their elderly and disabled neighbors’ sidewalks during winter weather events. Interested residents may register for the DC Volunteer Snow Team here.
