Statement from Mayor Bowser in Response to the U.S House of Representatives’ Passage of H.R.4901

Friday, April 29, 2016

(Washington, DC) -  Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives’ decision on the SOAR Act:

“Today, the House took a critical step to support District of Columbia Public and Public Charter Schools – helping to put more District students on their pathway to the middle class.  The funding authorized in H.R. 4901, the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Reauthorization Act, has helped our school district become the fastest improving urban school district in the country. With it, we have been able to recruit and retain the highest quality educators and administrators, improve facilities and expansion of our Public Charter schools, and increase our student enrollment rates. The SOAR Act helps every family in our community to have the choice for the best education, regardless of their ward or zip code.“
