Mayor Vincent C. Gray to Celebrate Completion of Energy Efficient Alley Lighting Project on Monday, May 14

Energy Efficient Alley Lighting Project

WHAT/WHO:                     Mayor Vincent C. Gray, District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Terry Bellamy, District Department of the Environment (DDOE) Director Christophe A. G. Tulou, DC Council representatives and officials from Lighting Science Group (LSG) will mark the completion of a $1 million effort to replace District alley lights with new energy-efficient, environmentally friendly lighting fixtures.

WHEN:                                 Monday, May 14, 2012
11:30 a.m.

WHERE:                                Alley behind 1700 block of Hobart Street NW (parallel to/between Hobart and Irving Streets NW; east entrance to alley on Mount Pleasant Street NW and west entrance on Hobart Street NW)

BACKGROUND:                 DDOT is completing the installation of 1,360 new light-emitting diode (LED) lights in alleys across the District, including every ward. The LED lights have a longer life expectancy than the District’s existing lights and will reduce maintenance and energy costs as well as greenhouse-gas emissions. It is estimated that the new alley lights will save the District approximately 591,000 KWH of electricity a year and cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 719 tons.

PHOTO OPP:                      DDOT crews will replace an inefficient incandescent bulb with a new LED light fixture to mark the last of the alley light replacements.
