Mayor Vincent C. Gray Announces That Applications Open on January 27 for District’s 2012 Summer Youth Employment Program

The program will provide important employment experiences for DC youth to help them develop job skills and teach them workplace etiquette

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray and the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) today announced that the application process for the District’s 2012 Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) will begin on Friday, January 27. The program will provide important employment experiences for DC youth to help them develop job skills and teach them workplace etiquette in order to prepare them for their future careers.

“We’re going to build on the success of last year’s program, which came in under budget and provided positive experiences for our youth and the employers,” said Mayor Gray. “Investing in youth workforce development is one of my highest priorities, because these young people are the District’s future. We’re looking for private and public-sector employers across the District to participate in the SYEP and provide meaningful jobs for the young people who participate.”

The online application for the 2012 SYEP will be available to District residents between the ages of 14 and 21 at www.summerjobs.dc.gov. Applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis and must be received by February 17, 2012. Space is limited, so youth should apply early.

“Midnight Madness,” SYEP’s kick-off event, will be held on Friday, January 27, from 3:15 pm to midnight (12 am) at the DOES headquarters building, located at 4058 Minnesota Avenue NE. All eligible youth and their parents and/or guardians who need assistance with online applications or simply a place to access the Internet are encouraged to attend.

“The key enhancements initiated last year to improve SYEP for employers and youth will continue this year, as we had great success in providing our youth with meaningful work experiences that we hope will last a lifetime,” said DOES Director Lisa María Mallory. “Through our partnerships with the business community, community-based organizations, schools, and institutions of higher education, SYEP plays a key role in preparing our youth for work and careers.”

The SYEP 2012 will begin on Monday, June 25, 2012, and end on Friday, August 3, 2012.
