Mayor Muriel Bowser Announces a New Collaboration Between United Medical Center and Howard University

Thursday, September 22, 2016

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser announces a collaboration between the Howard University College of Medicine and United Medical Center (UMC). The collaboration allows for Howard University to share its world-class medical services and physicians with UMC so that communities served by UMC will have access to enhanced healthcare services.

“This is exciting progress in my Administration’s commitment to enhancing the provision of healthcare services in all 8 wards,” said Mayor Bowser. “This collaboration between two of the District’s community-focused institutions is a powerful symbol that we are all better off when we work together. I appreciate the efforts of Howard University and UMC to finalize this collaboration and their commitment to making the District safer and stronger.”

The collaboration will enhance medical services east of the Anacostia River by allowing Howard University to provide general and specialized physicians to UMC and medical services to patients in the areas of otolaryngology, neurology, infectious diseases and other specialties.

“By collaborating with Howard University we have the opportunity to better fulfill our mission of providing excellent patient care and of obtaining positive clinical outcomes in a safe environment while maintaining balance among cost, quality and our commitment to Wards 7 and 8,” said Chris Gardiner, Chairman of the UMC Board of Directors.

Howard University College of Medicine provides students of high academic potential with a medical education of exceptional quality and prepares physicians and other healthcare professionals to serve the underserved and address healthcare disparities. The College also seeks to improve the health of Americans and the global community through public health training programs and initiatives.

“For more than a century, the Howard University College of Medicine has been dedicated to serving underserved communities,” said Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA. “By collaborating with UMC we extend that commitment while addressing healthcare disparities in communities east of the Anacostia River.”

The Not-for-Profit Hospital Corporation, commonly known as United Medical Center or UMC, is a District of Columbia government hospital serving Southeast DC and surrounding Maryland communities. UMC was created in 2010 to operate the hospital as an independent instrumentality of the District Government.
