Mayor Gray to Sign Drivers Safety Amendment Act of 2013

Bill Makes District One of First Jurisdictions in Nation to Create a Way for Undocumented Immigrants to Obtain Driver’s Licenses, Learner’s Permits or ID Cards

WHAT/WHO:  Mayor Vincent C. Gray, who will be joined by members of the DC Council, will hold a signing ceremony for the District of Columbia Drivers Safety Amendment Act of 2013

WHEN:  Monday, November 18, 2013
             2:30 pm – 3:30 pm

WHERE:  John A. Wilson Building
Mayor’s Press Briefing Room (Room G-9)
               1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

BACKGROUND:  Once signed into law, the DC Drivers Safety Amendment Act of 2013 will allow the District’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to issue a driver’s license, learner’s permit or identification card to undocumented District residents. The Drivers Safety Act is a practical and pragmatic solution to a problem the federal government has been unable to address. The District joins 10 other states that currently allow undocumented residents the opportunity to obtain a driver’s license, learner’s permit, or identification card – improving public safety and alleviating hardships experienced by undocumented residents who are currently unable to obtain licenses and identification. The act will also ensure that all residents can safely operate vehicles on the District’s roadways and will allow for the registration of insured vehicles.
