Mayor Gray Re-Nominates Sandra Mattavous-Frye as People’s Counsel

Asks DC Council to Reappoint Experienced Public-Services Advocate to Term Ending in 2015

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray today announced that he had re-nominated an experienced public-advocacy attorney to serve another term as the District’s People’s Counsel.

Sandra Mattavous-Frye has served in the position in interim, acting and permanent capacities since 2010. Her current term expires in June, and her re-nomination is subject to approval by the DC Council. The Office of the People’s Counsel educates, represents and protects DC utility ratepayers.

“Sandra has decades of experience in the Office of the People’s Counsel, and she has demonstrated her commitment and expertise at the agency’s helm since 2010,” said Mayor Gray. “I expect her to continue serving the people of the District of Columbia well as their advocate on issues related to utility rates.”

Mayor Gray first nominated Ms. Mattavous-Frye as People’s Counsel in April, and she was confirmed in July. She had previously filled the role in interim and acting capacities. Prior to that, she served as Deputy People’s Counsel. She has also served the agency as Director of Litigation, Energy Section Trial Supervisor and Senior Attorney. She has been admitted to the bars of the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland, the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. She is a graduate of Howard University and the Antioch School of Law. She resides in Ward 5.
