Mayor Gray and OSSE to Launch Statewide Athletic Association

WHAT/WHO:                     Mayor Vincent. C. Gray, State Superintendent of Education Hosanna Mahaley,

Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) Statewide Director of Athletics Clark Ray, DC Public Schools (DCPS) Athletics Director Stephanie Evans, coaches and student-athletes will announce the creation of the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA), providing the opportunity for members of the DC Interscholastic Athletic Association (DCIAA), the Washington Charter School Athletic Association (WCSAA) and area independent/non-public schools to compete in the first-ever DC state championship games. The announcement will be held in conjunction with Mayor Gray’s Biweekly Press Briefing.

BACKGROUND:  DCSAA will award DC State Championship titles in boys’ and girls’ cross-country, boys’ and girls’ soccer, and boys’ football in Division I and II, beginning in fall 2012.Commissioned by Mayor Gray and operated under the OSSE Statewide Athletics Office, DCSAA regulations will provide unified rules and oversight to member schools regarding student-athlete eligibility. DCSAA governance will be provided by an appointed Advisory Board of Interscholastic Athletics as well as a separate, independent DCSAA Appeals Board.
