Mayor Bowser to Join Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to Defend Death with Dignity Act

Monday, January 30, 2017

(Washington, DC) – On Tuesday, January 31 at 1 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will join Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton to defend the Death with Dignity Act – the District’s medical aid-in dying legislation – ahead of congressional interference to nullify the bill.

Congress passed the Home Rule Act in 1973 to give the District authority over its local laws, however, all DC bills must be transmitted to Congress for a review period before they can take effect. The Death with Dignity Act was transmitted for a 30-legislative-day review period by Congress on January 6, 2017. A bill takes effect at the expiration of the review period unless a resolution of disapproval is enacted into law during that period.

Mayor Muriel Bowser
Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton

WHERE:

Cannon House Office Building (Room 421)
