Mayor Bowser to Celebrate the Turnaround Arts Program Partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

Monday, February 6, 2017

(Washington, DC) On Tuesday, February 7, Mayor Muriel Bowser will join District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) Chancellor Antwan Wilson, President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (JFKC) Deborah Rutter, Turnaround Arts National Director Kathy Fletcher, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Joshua Bell, and singer Larisa Martinez to celebrate Washington, DC’s partnership for the Turnaround Arts Program in DC public schools – specifically Bunker Hill Elementary and Brookland Middle School. Serving as the new home for the Turnaround Arts Program, JFKC will support DCPS’ overall strategic approach to narrow the achievement gap and increase student engagement through music and the arts. Participating schools are also “adopted” by Turnaround Artists (mentors) such as Mr. Ma, Mr. Bell, and Ms. Martinez.

During the visit, the DC Youth Orchestra Bunker Hill will have the opportunity to practice with Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell as part of a ‘Master Class’ and perform in front of guests. During the assembly, Mr. Ma and Mr. Bell will also perform with Dance Place.

Following the performances, Mayor Bower, Chancellor Wilson, JFKC President Rutter, Turnaround Arts National Director Fletcher, Yo-Yo Ma, and Joshua Bell will participate in a media avail at 2:45 pm.
