Mayor Bowser to Host Annual Budget Engagement Forums

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

(Washington, DC) – On Thursday, February 23 at 6:30 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will kick off her Administration’s annual series of Budget Engagement Forums. For the third year in a row, the forums will give residents the opportunity to share their values and priorities with the Mayor before the budget is finalized. The Mayor will host three forums and all are open to the community and media.

Since launching the Budget Engagement Forums in 2015, Mayor Bowser has used public feedback to make key budget decisions, directing unprecedented investments toward affordable housing, ending homelessness, supporting public schools, and creating more employment opportunities for DC residents.

“Right now, there is uncertainty around how changes in federal funding and programming might affect Washington, DC. Without knowing any details, I can’t say with certainty how DC will be affected. However, what we do know is that whatever happens, we need to be prepared to stand up for and protect DC’s values,” said Mayor Bowser. “The Budget Engagement Forums allow me to hear directly from residents about their values and priorities. The DC Government belongs to the residents of DC. The values and priorities of Washingtonians, are the values and priorities of our government – we want the budget to reflect this.”

The Budget Engagement Forums are scheduled for Thursday, February 23 at Woodrow Wilson High School (Atrium); Saturday, February 25 at the Department of Employment Services; and Monday, February 27 at the Columbia Heights Education Campus (Gym). Residents can go to engagement.dc.gov to learn more about how to get involved in the budget process and to play the DC Budget Challenge.

At the forums, residents will receive an overview of the current budget environment, hear from other residents about their priorities, and participate in small group discussions about how the Mayor should allocate funds.

Press interested in attending the forums are asked to RSVP to [email protected].
